A letter from the 2010-2011 editorial team:
Welcome to AU, UW's speculative fiction journal! This is our first year, and we are excited to delve into the world of science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism literature at the UW!
Please let us introduce ourselves: we’re three of your fellow UW students, all with an immense love of sci-fi and fantasy and a passion to share this love with our university community. Our favorite books include the works of Douglas Adams, Tamora Pierce, JK Rowling, and Robert Jordan. We spend way too many hours (and that’s in linear time, mind) watching Doctor Who and Firefly, and we recognize and accept that Joss Whedon is our master.
To our chagrin, we have noticed that fantasy, science fiction, magical realism and other forms of genre fiction are oftentimes overlooked as esteemed and superlative forms of literature. On the contrary, we know that these forms of fiction can be incredibly nuanced and compelling, and are often examples of exemplary literary talent. Plus, they are as much fun as Wonderflonium.
Our aim, then, is to bring together a community of readers and writers who have also experienced the satisfaction of a well-cast spell and the triumph of an evil overlord slain, as well as welcome others into the far, far away galaxy of science fiction. We will work to create a quarterly speculative fiction literary journal by and for UW students in order to provide an alternative voice for those that wish to stray from reality and stray into speculative fiction.
If you enjoy our stories, please help us publish more! We need your help! Because we are just beginning, we are small and our readership is small. If you like to write, submit a story to us. If you like to read, pick up a copy of our journal and tell all of your friends about AU. If you don’t like to do anything at all and just want to share some ideas or advice, shoot us an email. We understand laziness like we understand fake science, don’t worry. We also understand the power of a community (*cough* Serenity *cough*). We want to hear from you, because we know that AU can be a strong addition to the literary community on campus.
Visit our Facebook page AU: UW speculative fiction, or email us at email@example.com. We post some of our favorite nerdy links on our page, and are prepared to give you the answer to life, the universe and everything in an email.
Live long and prosper,
Audra Linsenmayer, Nicole Scharping and Katie Hoffman
